Where there is the risk that a structure could fall down or because it is necessary to remove some vital supporting component for renewal or alteration then shoring or support scaffold must be considered.
The loads to be carried by shoring can be very great and the danger posed to contractors, passers by and to the building itself should never be under estimated, this is why adequate design is critical for unusual building projects.
This is particularly the case with historic buildings where inadequate care and attention to the installation of the scaffold may cause irreparable damage and where poor planning could result in actual collapse of the structure.
